Stretching , Yoga, & Exercise
As we age, we stiffen losing flexibility and circulation. We stiffen after injuries, or over-use. It amazes me how patients will come in with arthritis, injury, or after surgery and have received no instruction on self-care or stretching from their physician. Our joints function to give us flexibility of movement, proper stretching exercise helps us maintain this for decades after it is lost without such exercise. Our joints need to provide a second function, and that is to permit the flow of energy or chi, and blood born nutrients and oxygen (and removal of waste & CO2 ) through them. If the joint becomes congested through lack of use, or degeneration, it slows the river of life that flows through all our tissues. The rewards are many for maintaining this free flow in our bodies. I've seen daily stretching, and self-treatment through acupressure or chi-gung energy healing make the difference between crippling degeneration of joints and complete or near complete freedom of movement. We provide this instruction at the Center For Natural Healing in Minneapolis (612-825-3070). And your naturopath, chiropractor, yoga instructor, acupressurist, or chi gung instructor can also develop for you a program of self care. Books can support this, but I find for most myself, and for most of my patients, a live person who's devoted him or herself to developing a skill and understanding of these techniques works best for instruction..
